- The clock keeps running if you leave the page, as it would in the test centre.
- Every answer comes with a worked explanation.
Ready when you are
Find a quiet 45 minutes. The clock starts when you press start, and you see your score the moment you submit.
This mock copies the real test, so the clock and the mark feel familiar on the day. Pick your paper first: Operatives, a Specialist paper if your trade has its own, or Managers and Professionals (MAP). Every answer comes with a worked explanation, because CITB can word a real question differently from its revision books. This is an independent practice test site for CITB papers, not CITB itself. You book the real test with CITB when you are ready, and it costs £23.50 (CITB, checked 25 October 2026).
Start a free 50-question CITB mock test
The free CITB mock test gives you 50 questions and 45 minutes, the same as the real test, and marks you against 45 out of 50. It copies the format of the CITB Health and Safety Test, so nothing about the clock or the mark is new on the day. Your first full mock on each paper is free.
Your result appears as soon as you submit: your score out of 50, your score in each CITB knowledge area and your score by topic. Every question then shows the right answer and a worked explanation. Sitting a Specialist or MAP paper? Pick it in the selector above, or choose your paper in the next section.
Which CITB test should you practise for?
Practise the paper you will sit: Operatives, a Specialist test for your trade, or Managers and Professionals (MAP). CITB points you to the card finder to check which test your job needs. The table shows how the three papers differ.
| Paper | What it covers | Voiceover | CITB revision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operatives | Five core knowledge areas | 14 languages | GT100, sections A to E |
| Specialist | Core questions plus one of 12 specialisms | English and Welsh | GT100 A to E, plus your specialism's chapter in section F |
| Managers and Professionals (MAP) | Five sections, A to E, updated June 2023 | English, with Welsh on screen | GT200 |
All three papers have 50 questions, a 45-minute limit and a pass mark of 45 (CITB, checked 25 October 2026).

Operatives
CSCS asks for the Operatives test with the Labourer, Trainee and Apprentice cards (cscs.uk.com, checked 25 October 2026). Its questions come from CITB's five core knowledge areas, set out on the CITB Operatives Test page and in the next section.

Specialist
A Specialist test adds questions on your trade to the core questions, and CSCS asks for it with the Gold Supervisor card. CITB runs 12 specialisms, from Supervisory (SUP) and Plumbing (JIB) (PLUM) to five HVACR and HVACE papers, all listed on CITB Specialist Tests.

Managers and Professionals (MAP)
The MAP test has five sections, A to E, from legal and management to environment, and CSCS asks for it with the Black Managers card. CITB updated it in June 2023 and says the content is not role specific: see the CITB Managers and Professionals (MAP) Test.

Taking a CITB Site Safety Plus course such as SMSTS, SSSTS or HSA? Its course exam is a different test from the HS&E test. Practise it on CITB Site Safety Plus Mock Tests.
What topics do CITB test questions cover?
CITB test questions cover five core knowledge areas: working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities and specialist. Our topic pages split those areas into 18 topics. Each topic page has 10 free practice questions, each with a worked explanation, then a quiz on that topic, so you can keep practising one area at a time.

How is the CITB mock test marked?
Each mock is marked out of 50, and you pass at 45 correct answers, the same 90% bar CITB sets for the Operatives, Specialist and MAP papers. Here is what happens from start to result:
- The clock runs for 45 minutes, and leaving the page does not stop it. CITB's real test cannot be paused once it starts either.
- You can flag a question and come back to it before you submit.
- Every question you leave blank counts as wrong.
- Answers stay hidden until you finish, then you see your score, your score by CITB knowledge area and your score by topic.
- Every question shows the right answer and a worked explanation, and your weakest topic gets a link so you can practise it next.
The real test reports weak areas too: CITB's score report marks each subject where you did not answer every question correctly. For how CITB reports a real result, see the CITB test pass mark.
Is the CITB practice test free?
Yes. You can sit a full 50-question mock free: 1 every 7 days without an account, or 3 every 7 days with a free account. A paid plan gives you unlimited mock tests on every paper. You buy a plan through your account on this site.
| Free | With a paid plan | |

The real test costs £23.50 for each booking (CITB, checked 25 October 2026), and CITB does not let you re-sit within 48 hours of a fail. See the CITB test cost for vouchers and rebooking fees.

What do CITB test questions look like?
CITB shows its question styles in a demo test on its Operatives page, and the demo is not scored. You can try the demo test on citb.co.uk. CITB also says it may word a real question differently from its revision materials, "however the meaning will remain the same". So learn why an answer is right, not just which letter it was.
The five samples below show how our practice questions work: a question, a set of answers, the right answer and a worked explanation. They are practice questions written for this site, not CITB's test questions.
Sample question 1 · Manual Handling
A handling job can only be done safely by someone who has been shown a particular technique. Which Schedule 1 group flags that?
- Other factors, because training is not part of the four main groups
- The tasks, because the technique needed is a feature of the task being carried out
- The working environment, because training is delivered on the site
- Individual capability, which asks about special information or trainingCorrect answer
Why D: Group 4 asks whether the job requires special information or training for its safe performance. It sits with the questions about strength, height, pregnancy and health.
Sample question 1 · Working at Height
What does regulation 13 require about places of work at height?
- That they are inspected once a week by an appointed competent person
- That the surface and fall protection are checked before each useCorrect answer
- That they are photographed and the record kept for three months
- That they are signed off by the principal contractor each morning
Why B: Regulation 13 requires the surface and every parapet, permanent rail or other fall protection measure to be checked, so far as is reasonably practicable, on each occasion before the place is used.
Sample question 1 · coshh
Which control option should be chosen under principle (d)?
- The one that the workforce finds least intrusive to work with
- The one that the supplier of the substance recommends in the data sheet
- The most effective and reliable option minimising escape and spreadCorrect answer
- The one that requires the least maintenance over the project lifetime
Why C: Principle (d) requires the most effective and reliable control options that minimise the escape and spread of substances hazardous to health.
Sample question 1 · fire-safety
What should you do first on discovering a fire on site?
- Attempt to put it out with the nearest available extinguisher
- Raise the alarm so that others can be warned and can evacuateCorrect answer
- Photograph the fire so there is a record for the investigation
- Find the site manager and report it to them in person directly
Why B: Regulation 30 requires evacuation procedures and that everyone is familiar with them. Raising the alarm protects everyone, while tackling the fire protects only the immediate area.
Sample question 1 · Safety Signs & Signals
When may the 'General danger' warning sign NOT be used?
- To warn about hazardous substances or mixtures, with a narrow exceptionCorrect answer
- To warn about any hazard that already has a specific sign of its own
- To warn about electrical hazards, which need their own dedicated sign
- To warn about any hazard outside the normal site working hours
Why A: An amendment added the rule that the General danger sign must not be used to warn about hazardous substances or mixtures, except to indicate stores of a number of them.
Is this the official CITB test?
No. CITB Practice Test is an independent practice site: we are not CITB, Pearson VUE or CSCS, and we never book tests.
You book the real test with CITB, online or on 0344 994 4488 (8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 12pm Saturday). You sit it at a Pearson Professional Centre or an Internet Test Centre. We take no bookings and add no fee.
Our questions are written for practice. They are not CITB's test questions, and a pass here is not a pass on the day. Every question is written and checked by the CITB Practice Test Team.
CITB's own revision is the GT100 book, its download and the HS&E operatives and specialists app. CITB recommends you "work through all the sample questions in the revision materials" before you book.
CITB practice test FAQs
Each answer below was checked against citb.co.uk on 25 October 2026.
Is there a CITB practice test PDF?
No. We do not publish our question bank as a PDF. You practise it here instead, against the clock, with a worked explanation after each answer. CITB's revision book for Operatives and Specialists is the GT100, which also comes as GT100 DL, a download for Windows.
How hard is the CITB test?
A pass needs 45 correct answers out of 50, so only five questions can go wrong. A full timed mock shows you which topics to revise first.
Can you take the CITB test online?
No. The real CITB test runs at a Pearson Professional Centre or an Internet Test Centre, but you can practise online here. CITB lists no at-home option for the HS&E test. CITB also runs a mobile testing service for group bookings.
How is this different from CITB's demo test?
CITB's demo test shows the question styles but is not scored. A mock on this site is a scored test: 50 questions, a 45-minute timer and a pass at 45 out of 50.
